Can I Install A New Video Card On A Dell Inspiron 1520 Laptop?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 Laptop and I have a Intel Media Accelerator Basic Video Card. I want to get a better one to run games like Gears of War and others but I don't know if I could take out the Intel video card and put a better catd in like a ATI.|||Um...yes and no...

If the laptop has a physically separate card connected to the motherboard, yes you can, but as with a desktop, you are limited with what card you can use by the integrated chipset. If it is an nVidia chipset, you can *only* use nVidia laptop cards. If it is a generic or ATi chipset, you can use any vid-card that is scaled for a laptop.

If the laptop uses an on-board only graphics chipset (most do), and does not have a PCI-e or AGP connector (or the laptop case does not have the space for a card), you can not install a new card.

Incidentally, Dell doesn't care who's parts you use (if the laptop is physically upgradable), since they manufacture nothing except completed units and profits. In short, they use any parts (including used, oh, sorry..."refurbished") in their "new" computers.

In all likelihood, for most games, you'll probably need to invest in a desktop as well as your laptop, since most games do not support mobile chipsets. I'm not saying that a "compatable" mobile chipset won't run the game, simply that the game may not run correctly (if at all) with a mobile chipset. Besides, why would you want to pay all that money over and aobe the cost of your ISP to Microslut to play a game?

Good Luck!|||You have one of the best moding laptops. IF you can find a better graphics card, yes you can install it, just be sure its an ATI and not a nvidia GeForce card.|||Howdy,

This will show you how.

However, Dell consists completely of heartless scumbags who have decided you can only Dell components in Dell laptops. So you'll have to contact Dell and get a videocard from them.

My advice would be to get a new laptop, it's about the same price as a new videocard. Even better advice would be to get a normal desktop computer.
