New Video Card?

SO, i'm kinda new with tinkering with computers. I want to install a "MSI NX8400GS-TD256EH GeForce 8400GS 256MB 64-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16" Video Card, and i'm not sure if it'll fit in my computer in the first place. I'm also wondering if my RAM disk (512 MB) will be able to handle it... I bought orange box, but eps. 1, 2 Team Fortress 2, and Portal do not work. Yougamers tells me, i just need to get a new video card and it'll work fine, but i'm not sure... I haven't bought the card yet, but i just want to be sure this'll work before i do it...|||It should work, but i would have very poor perfermance. i recommend somethings a bit more powerfull any thing higher htan a 8600 GT is good. or if you ant to go the ATI route then hd2900.

I also recommend for any gamer to to have a barebones of 1gb of ram. but i would bump it up to 2gb

also make aure that when you do buy your graphic's card that it is compatible with your motherboard eg AGP,PCI PCIe. and make sure u have a enough juice. a stock power supply does not proivde enough power to higher end cards|||Thanks, I'll buy a new RAM Card When i get the Chance...

|||I can run orange box with no lag at 1024x768 with everything high with this pc:

CPU: AMD Athlon 64, 2200 MHz (11 x 200) 3200+

Video Card: XFX GeForce FX 5500

Memory: 1.5GB

So if your pc is around mine or more powerful it will work for sure.

Just pwned all your long answers.|||wow some very conflicting opinions here.

So the question 'will it fit'?

If you have agp it needs to be an agp card. if you have pci-e it needs to be pci-e. Basically, if your machine is less than 4 years old itll be pci-e. So any pci-e card will fit if this is the case. If you're not sure email me your motherboard or pc model info and Ill tell you.

512 meg ram will be fine for all the games you've mentioned.

the thing you need to upgrade - as you've rightly ascertained from yougamers, is your gpu

An 8400gs will probably cut it but you will note people generally recommend higher hardware. although this card will work, spending a bit more will give you better resolutions and frame rates. this is entirely up to you. an 8600gt is ideal but will depend on your budget. in answer to your question the 8400 will work, but 'work' is a broad category. some people need the frame rates and resolution. others are happy if the game just runs. it depends where you fit on these two poles as to whether its the card for you.|||ok

512 mb of ram will not do

a 256 will not do

you need a geforce with 512 mb

and maybe 3 times as much ram

look in your computer if you have an AGP port, its better for graphics cards.

if not you need to get a PCI

usually all PCs have a free pci slot.

if you upgrade your memory, if it doesnt work all by itself when you put your new memory stick in, its defective.

dont call customer support. theylll ask you to upgrade your BIOS '

and then everything goes to hell after that.

ive been down that road

i never upgraded memory again

i just had to buy a new computer. so i got one with 2 gigs of ram in it.

if you cant buy a new computer, you should get yours serviced to get more memory in it, after you back up your files onto an external, sometimes they mess everything up.|||The 8400GS is a decent card for games that are a couple of years old or for playing new games on monitors with lower resolutions such as 1024X768. But still I do believe that the 8600 or the 8800 series would be a better choice. I myself have the 8400GS and know for a fact that it runs the Orange Box games including Portal,TF2, and Half Life 2 well but you do need to have 1GB of RAM to install any of these Video Cards. To make sure your system is compatible with a PCI-Express Card such as an 8400GS or above, run a program called SIW which is free for download at http://www.gtopala.com/. This will tell you first off if you have a PCI-Express slot and iff you do what type of RAM you need to upgrade with.

Heres some tips for doing this: From the main menu of SIW click on "System Slots" under the hardware category and you'll see if you own a PCI-Express slot computer

Secondly look under the section "Memory" in Hardware and see what kind of RAM your computer has and then search the part number or contact your pc manufacturer for upgrade pieces.|||get atleast a 8600gt min. but if your getting that you might as well get the HD2600 better bang for the buck. Ram you might need to upgrade to 1gb atleast but at least get a HD2600 since the 8400gs can't play games
