Worth getting a new video card?

Currently I have a 7900 GTS, I was wondering if it would be worth it to upgrade to a 8800 or 9800 GT even if my processor is mediocre (Dual Core 1.87 Ghz). Would I only see a minor increase in performance? The windows ranking is currently 4.8 for the CPU.|||i have the 8800gtx, i can tell you its nice, but with your processer which is 1.87ghz...id focus on getting a new one of those above 2.4 or something like that. Then get a new gphx card. But yea if your really looking for something nice, i can play most games on medium-high with this card.|||hi martin

interesting question.....the 7900gts does not exist, theres a 7900gs and 7900gt,plus theres the 7900gtx which is the best single gpu card in the nvidia 7 series

however whichever it is it depends on what your using the card for...for example if you have alot of direct x 10 games then a upgrade would be recommended however if your only running the odd game and mostly direct x 9 games then the 7900 would be fine

the thing about graphic cards is that allthough the geforce 7900gs was a excellent card in its day,it only equivelent to something like the geforce 9500gt...this may sound strange especially when you consider how good the 7900 was,but this is how much graphic card technology has advanced over the last few years..what was awesome a few years ago is not that good these days..

so heres the deal....if you buy a geforce card at the same price you paid for your geforce 7900 then you would probally be looking at a 500% performance increase !

why so high...well since gpu,s (graphic processing units ) have reduced in size ( the 7900 used a 75nm(nanometer) process were the latest gpu,s use 45nm) this means they are cheaper to make and these savings are passed to the customer

so what do i recommend...well i would go with something like the "Gigabyte GeForce GTX 260 OC 896MB GDDR3 PCI-Express Graphics Card"( http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/Othe… )....this is a excellent graphics card and will run anything you throw at it...its 448bit memory interface and 896mb of gddr3 memory running at 2000mhz make this a real speed demon...and with a 650mhz core clock and direct x 10 support this represents good value

one point though.this requires more power than your 7900 did...and your looking at a 600watt or more psu with 30A or more on the +12v rail...and two in sli would bring this up to 800watt with 45A or more on the +12v rail

however just one gtx260 would be ok..and with your dual core cpu and 2gb of ram you will be seeing games like you never seen before.....so in answer to your question..a minor increase would be replaced with a massive increase in performance..

even the geforce 9800gt would be much better than the 7900.and i would go as far to say the 9600gt would be around 2 times as good as a 7900

i hope this helps, any more advice let me know

good luck mate !|||In your case, I would upgrade to new computer. I would bet you are running XP and your video card is AGP, the newer cards are PCI-e which will not fit. The change will be minor increase, you will not see the different. If your game program is looking for higher Directx.

If a laptop, you cannot change video card.
