hi. I just bought a new custom built desktop from someone. I really like it, but I would like to upgrade the video card. I have only 1 PCIe 2.0 x16(the rest are PCIe or PCI) which is enough for me right now. The only question I have is when I'm looking into the memory interface, I need to choose whether I want DDR2, DDR3, DDR4, ect,. Does this have to do with my ram? I'm confused because video card interface goes up to DDR5 and ram interface goes up to only DDR3. The ram interface on my mobo currently is DDR2. Does that limit me to only getting a video card with DDR2 interface and if thats the case, then who uses the DDR5 video cards? Thank you for your help.|||Video card memory and your computers RAM are unrelated and both used for different tasks, being the video card will handle textures and graphics whilst the ram handles straight computational data. The video card memory will be much faster and is specially designed to handle the increased workload, so the measurement standard will often be much higher. Your mobos memory will not affect the operation of the graphics processor directly, but if you are using this for intense gaming or 3d work, you may notice a small lag because of the inherent speed differences of the two, and because the graphics card will rely on the steady stream of data from the RAM. I would recommend GDDR3, GDDR4, or GDDR5.
So walk away knowing:
You can safely choose a video card with DDR2 speed or higher, though I recommend a faster standard
The Video memory and the system memory are not related or shared
Buying a videocard with faster memory will be beneficial.
